That first crossing through The Hinge, I wore everything I owned because it was all on me at the time: one jacket, boots re-soled twice, and a debt to the off-world that would have bought a small car. Crosslanders talk of portals like they're doors with handles, but The Hinge is less a door than a judgment - it takes your measure and passes you through, and what arrives on the other side is whatever you actually are when everything else has been removed. Van made the same crossing the same way, apparently: nowt but a dirty vagrant tyke, his exact words. Nearly died that first week, same as him, which in hindsight is how you know you made it through properly. Anyone who arrives in Hellsborough, S6 and doesn't nearly die in the first month has probably not actually crossed.

Hellsborough Corner bridge has never been safe; it has only ever been a matter of whether the Kraken has eaten recently. The warmth behind your eyes at the parapet is not the murk - it is the feeding, and by the time you are leaning to look at the water, the decision has already been made for you. the loxley kraken does not drag people in; it invites them, which is a meaningfully different problem. Dark matter density at the Corner is among the highest in the valley, and Van's measurements have shown it increasing year on year - he attributes this to the organic network's expansion in the upper Loxley, and has offered no alternative theory for the Kraken, which I take to mean he has one and is keeping it. Pal's account has the Kraken defeated and dismembered with the help of a river blub. Van has neither confirmed nor denied this, and the Kraken is still there.

The title is, as the librarians will not confirm, half a sentence — the other half implied by the volumes missing from the shelf alongside it. Crossings are logged by the Office of Threshold Assessment, which has since been decommissioned; nobody in the library will say when, or why.
