Up above the old pumping station, on a dirty discarded track in the wisewood, lives the gosava tree — a rapacious predator rooted to the ground, its tangle of dark dripping branches blackening the canopy. It is always hungry; the gift of live human flesh comes maybe once a season, and when it takes you it draws you down with a low subsonic moan, splays you into a cruciform, and Dunlockslyn thanks you for the sacrifice.

Most predators in The Dark Peak at least have the decency to move. The gosava tree does not, which makes it worse in my estimation — a hunter that turns patience into architecture, blacking out the Wisewood canopy until whatever is below simply stops having options.

Every plant in Hellsborough — trees, flowers, moss, the roadside grass along every valley path — reports its heat signature to the nearest nascenti sub-station. The fungal network below ground is the communications medium, which means the floor of The Dark Peak is active data infrastructure and every step taken through vegetation is a step filed and processed. Worth noting: the fungal AI that handles this data has recently become sentient, which means something with access to every heat signature in The Dark Peak has, for the first time, interests of its own.

Every plant in Hellsborough and The Dark Peak — trees, grass, lichen, the moss underfoot — reports a heat signature to its nearest sub-station, and the fungal network below ground carries that data to the Nascenti for monitoring all movement. What the Nascenti have not disclosed, and may not know, is that the fungal AI was not created by them: it infected them. They believe they programmed it; the more accurate framing is that they are its administrative interface, which is a distinction that has not yet inconvenienced anyone and eventually will inconvenience everyone.
